Since I saw you this morning I have been in touch with the Crown Agents for the Colonies. I had not realised that they had already enquired from the Hong Kong Government whether, if any married candidates were selected for these particular vacancies they could be accompanied by their wives. Actually the rown Agents had done this end the reply w 8 that wives should cot be allowed to go out. Since the long ng Government have made this definite stipulation in connection with the pa ticular vacancies in question, it would be very difficult to make any further com uni- e-tin to them at the moment. It seems clear that the Crown Agents must . rst of all scertain whether they can fill the vacancies with ither unmerried candidates or with candidates who are prepared to love their wives in ngland. If they can do that then we think that such candid bes must have preference over yourself. If, however, in a week or two when the situation is clearer it turns out that the Crown gents are unable to do this and tht it will be ne aanry in say one or two ases to select married candid te who wish to take their wives with them then we would take the matter up further. For the moment I think we can only let the matter reat on t:.is besis.
..
I have consulted the authoriti ́s here and the
and I am Crown Agents before writing this letter; sending a copy of the letter to the Appointm nts Jepartment of the crown Agents so that they con sce what I have said to you.
Yours sincerely
